Anthology Announcement: Personal Essays by Autistic Irish Adults

I’m currently editing an Anthology of personal essays written by Autistic Irish adults, which will be published by New Island Books. This will be the first of its kind in Ireland, and will be a wonderful way to compile the thoughts and experiences of a diverse range of Autistic people. I hope this book will not only be wonderful read, but will also spread autism awareness to the general public. I’m particularly keen to show how autism can be so different for different people.

I’m still looking for essays, so feel free to get in touch if you wish to express an interest in contributing to the book. The essay deadline is mid-May 2024.

hi Niamh: will you have copies of the essay anthology for sale at the AsIAm conference? I’ve got my ticket for that already but would like to attend your breakout session too which I’ve just noticed here, thanks. Congrats on this book which I’ll look for too in Dubray branch in Grafton Street Dublin. Best wishes, Una Sheehan

Hi Una. The Anthology won’t be published until Spring 2025, by New Island Books. I’m at the stages of editing the essays at the moment, and it is a truly wonderful, so many people sent in amazing essays.

hi Niamh: thanks for your swift reply! I will look out for it’s appearance next spring so, & hope to see you at the conference; may I book into your breakout session? I had chosen the PDA session but it’s for youngsters & I’m a 75-year old pensioner who got full diagnosis only at 70, through luck & sheer persistent search for answers to my quandaries! Best wishes, Una

Better late than never! We have a lovely essay by another late-diagnosed woman in her 70s in the Anthology, so that might be nice for you to read, see if you can relate to it. I’m afraid I have nothing to do with the booking system for the conference, but you can book your breakout sessions through AsIAm. I’m sure they will help you change your session.

hi Niamh: thanks again for another quick reply! Good to know I’m not the only 70s yr old late diagnosis story, so! I’ve just succeeded in renewing my ID Card & will be calling AsIAm on Monday when their help line is open again, to switch to your breakout session at the 5th Oct conference on my booked ticket program, hope with fingers crossed that they can/will. See you there, best wishes again, Una
